Both photos of this Pontypool rear garden were taken from the same upstairs window, which makes the change easy to see. The garden is a simple rectangle enclosed by white-painted fences, with a small paved area by the house, a lawn down one side and a gravel seating area with a timber edge down the other.
The job was a rear garden tidy. In the before photo, the lawn was thin, mossy and yellowed, with bare patches and dead growth near the house. In the after shot, taken as the light was going, the lawn is lush and even, and you can still see the faint lines where the new rolls of turf meet.
Reading the two photos side by side
The layout did not change: the gravel area, the timber edging and the low deck at the back all stayed where they were. What changed was the condition of everything. The lawn went from worn and patchy to fresh green turf, the gravel area looks cleaner, and the far corner bed is neatly planted.
The evening photo also shows small garden lights glowing along the back fence and in the far corner bed, which pick out the edges of the lawn once it gets dark.
Why a tidy can be enough
Not every garden needs to be redesigned. When the layout already works, a thorough tidy can make it feel new again for far less disruption. On a job like this, the usual steps are:
- clearing weeds, dead growth and rubbish from lawns, beds and gravel;
- lifting a worn-out lawn and preparing the soil underneath;
- laying new turf, butting the rolls tightly and watering well;
- trimming edges and sweeping hard surfaces so everything looks finished.
