If we find sheeting we think may contain asbestos, we leave it alone and tell you. It should be tested and removed by someone properly set up for that work, and it is not something to break up and bag with the garden waste.

Here is something every householder should know. You have a legal duty to make sure your waste is passed to someone authorised to take it. If waste ends up fly-tipped and it can be traced back to you, you can be held responsible, even if you paid someone to remove it. Before anyone takes waste away from your property, check that they are a registered waste carrier. The public register for Wales is held by Natural Resources Wales and can be searched online.
Be wary of anyone who knocks on the door offering to take rubbish away cheaply for cash, and ask for a receipt that shows where it is going. Once a garden is cleared, you can finally see its shape, its levels and where the water sits. On the long, sloping terrace gardens of Tonypandy and Abertillery, that is often the first time in years anyone has seen the old steps and walls underneath the growth. On a Cwmbran estate garden, it may reveal a perfectly good lawn waiting to be brought back.
Because we are landscapers as well, the clearance can lead straight into the next job. That might be tree and hedge work for anything too big to cut back by hand, fresh turf, a new fence where the old one has rotted behind the ivy, or a patio for the sunny corner you had forgotten about.
If you only want the clearance, that is fine too. Some people like to take it from there themselves, and a clean, open plot is a much easier place to start.
