This post was about our fencing work in Pontypridd, and the two photos show a finished run from this fencing job: overlap panels with a trellis strip along the top, held in slotted concrete posts, beside a strip of bark chippings and a concrete path by the house.
It is a popular combination for back and side gardens. The solid lower part gives privacy at eye level when you are sitting down, while the trellis lifts the height, lets some light and air through, and gives climbers something to hold onto.
Horizontal lap panels and square trellis
Overlap (or lap) panels are made from thin, wavy-edged boards laid horizontally and nailed into a frame. They are a lighter, more economical option than close-board and they go up quickly between concrete posts. In the photos the timber is still its fresh, green-tinged treated colour, which will fade to a softer brown over the first year or so.
The trellis toppers are square-pattern panels that sit on top of the main panel in the same post slots. Along this run they give an open, airy top edge rather than a solid wall of timber, which suits a boundary shared with a neighbour's garden. Details worth noticing
Concrete posts are a sensible pairing with lightweight panels on an exposed boundary, because wind pressure on the panel is taken by posts that will not rot at ground level. Our guide to concrete or timber posts goes into the choice.

Do trellis toppers make a fence taller?
Yes. They add extra height above the main panel while staying partly open. Check the height limits for your boundary with your local council, as they are lower next to roads and footpaths.
Are overlap panels strong enough for a windy spot?
In concrete posts they do well in most gardens. On very exposed boundaries, close-board is sturdier, so we will say if we think your fence needs the heavier panel.
Will the green colour of new panels change?
Yes. Pressure-treated timber often starts with a green or yellow tint and weathers to brown. You can stain it once it has dried out if you want a particular colour.
