Most fencing jobs in Cardiff come down to neighbours. Deeds sometimes mark ownership with a small T on the plan, though not always clearly. Where it is unclear, many people agree to share the job.
Height is the other question we hear a lot. Back garden fences up to the usual height rarely need permission, but a tall fence beside a road or pavement can, and some Cardiff streets sit inside conservation areas. Behind the Victorian terraces of Roath and Canton, the boundary is often an old brick wall rather than a fence. Where more privacy is wanted, a slatted or trellis screen can go on top, fixed to its own posts rather than bolted into tired brickwork that was never built to take the wind load. Getting posts, concrete and panels into these yards is half the job. Where there is a rear lane, it makes life easier. Where there is not, every post goes through the hall, so we lay down floor protection and check that a full-length panel will actually make the turn. Old timber leaves the same way, so you are not left with a pile of rotten boards in the yard.

Out in Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Llanishen and the interwar streets around them, the typical job is a full run down the side of the garden, often replacing thin overlap panels that have given up after a few winters. Close board on well-set posts is our usual suggestion here. It stands up to wind funnelling between houses and looks good for longer. On newer estates at the edges of Cardiff, front gardens are often open plan and the deeds may restrict what can go up at the front, so it is worth checking before adding a front fence or gate. Back boundaries on these estates are sometimes built on compacted spoil, and we dig through it so posts sit in firm ground.
Many Cardiff fencing jobs are part of a wider makeover. A new boundary is easiest to build before a patio or deck goes down, because we can set the posts cleanly and finish the paving neatly up to the gravel boards. We often pair it with patio paving in Cardiff or a new deck in Cardiff, and a slatted screen along one side of a small yard can make a sitting area feel much more private.
