Cardiff front walls take the knocks: bins, bikes, cars pulling in. We build low walls in brick to match the house, with a coping that suits the street, and rebuild the ones that have been hit or have simply given up.
Retaining walls are less common in flat inner Cardiff, but gardens on rising ground in the northern suburbs and around the edges of the city often need one to level a lawn or a patio.
Back steps down from a kitchen door into a sunken Cardiff yard are often uneven and worn. We rebuild them with consistent risers so the drop from the house is safe.

Behind many Cardiff terraces there is a brick wall between the yard and the rear lane, and more brick dividing you from next door. These were often built on shallow footings, in soft lime mortar, and they have had a hundred winters of rain on both faces. Typical problems are a bulge halfway along, a crack where a tree or a drain has shifted things, or bricks at the foot turned to powder by damp.
A lean of a few centimetres is not always urgent, but a wall that moves when you push it, or has opened a crack you can put a finger in, needs attention before it drops into the lane. Where a section has to come down, we take it back to sound brick, dig a new footing and rebuild, reusing the old bricks where they are good. In Cardiff a garden wall usually has a neighbour on the other side, and often a lane that people walk along every day. Before we touch a shared wall we suggest you talk to next door, and some work on a boundary wall can bring the Party Wall Act into play. Parts of Cardiff, Llandaff among them, are conservation areas where altering or taking down a wall facing the street may need consent. We are landscapers, not solicitors or planners, so check with Cardiff Council before any work starts.
Height matters too. Walls next to a road or footpath are generally limited in how tall they can be without permission, so if you want a higher front wall for privacy, ask the council first. Cardiff jobs are often shaped more by access than by the brickwork itself. On a mid-terrace with no rear lane, every brick, bag of cement and barrow of old rubble goes through the house, so we protect the floors and plan the order of work to keep the trips down. Where there is a lane, deliveries and a skip or waste collection have to fit around neighbours and parking, and a permit may be needed for a skip on the road.
We work all of that out at the quote visit. Old bricks that are too damaged to reuse, spoil from the footing and any concrete are cleared and taken away. If the yard is buried under years of clutter first, a garden clearance in Cardiff is a sensible first step.
In a small Cardiff garden, brickwork can do two jobs at once. A raised bed along a sunny wall becomes a place to grow and a place to sit. A low wall between a patio and a lawn turns one square into two rooms. We keep planters well drained so wet soil is not sitting against the brick, and cap them so they are comfortable to perch on.
