For paving, that means digging out to the right depth, laying and compacting a sub-base, and setting falls so water runs off rather than pooling against the house. For fencing, it means posts set deep and firm. For new lawns, it means breaking up compacted ground and levelling good topsoil before a single roll of turf goes down. For retaining walls, it means solid footings and drainage behind the wall so water pressure does not push it over.
Where a garden already holds water, we look at drainage before anything else, from simple soakaways and gravel channels to raising levels or rethinking the layout. Part of a good quote is telling you what not to do. If a cheaper material will do the job just as well, we say so. If a tree only needs lifting rather than felling, we say that too. If a job needs a check with the council first, such as work on a protected tree or in a conservation area, we point you towards it before anything is cut.
