Most of the paving we are asked about in Caerphilly falls into two camps. Owners of interwar and post-war semis want to replace a tired, uneven patio that several previous owners have patched. Under the turf on these plots there is often compacted clay and some leftover building rubble. That affects how deep we dig and how we deal with water, because clay holds rain and a patio laid straight onto it can sit wet all winter. Behind the interwar and post-war semis in Caerphilly we often find a patchwork: original concrete slabs, an extension laid later in a different stone, and a step that has sunk at one end. Slabs rock, weeds fill the joints and puddles sit in the same corner after every shower.

We can, but on most Caerphilly new-builds it works out better to lift the original thin slabs and lay a new, larger patio in one go. The base is then consistent throughout, the levels are right, and you do not end up with two different stones side by side.
It will if the base is deep enough and the falls send water somewhere it can go, such as a planted border, a channel drain or a soakaway where the ground allows. Clay is common under Caerphilly estates, so we plan for it on every quote.
Sometimes. Dropped kerbs need the council’s approval, and surfaces that shed water onto the road may need permission too. Check with Caerphilly County Borough Council first; we can then lay permeable block paving or drain the drive into the garden to suit.
