Mid-toned slabs are often the easiest to live with in Port Talbot. Very pale stone shows every mark left by salt, blown sand and wet leaves, while very dark slabs can show a whitish salt bloom after a dry, windy spell. Whatever the colour, dense, non-absorbent surfaces such as porcelain and granite are the easiest to rinse clean, and sealing a porous stone stops dirt soaking in.
Porcelain and granite cope with salt air and blown sand better than most, as they absorb very little and are very hard. Dense natural stone is a good option too. Softer stones can still work in Port Talbot, but they are better in sheltered spots and sealed.
